Recently I picked up some camellia seed during a trip. The trees were unlike anything I could find around here and the ground was just sprinkled with seeds. I never had camellia seeds before. After a quick online search it seems to me that camellia isn’t too difficult to grow from seed. I know it takes a while until a plant flowers but I’m not too worried about that. Just seeing it grow is enough for me. It’s more of an experiment and I just love to collect seeds I find and try to get them to germinate. So I gathered a big hand full of seeds and brough them home. About half of them I cracked open in a vise which works well for all kinds of seeds. In my experience it helps to open the very hard shell that surrounds some seeds. I planted them in a mixture of sand and a little fresh compost I just sieved. Now it’s time to wait and see what happens. If this goes really bad I still have the second half of the seeds for a second try.
I also brought home some Prunus mume (Ume) seeds and seeds of two variants of a Japanese cherry tree. Maybe you can guess where my recent trip took me to.
