Instead of having gas hoses attached directly to the burners I changed to copper pipe. I also added a ball shut off valve and two needle valves. While I was at it I also replaced the pressure regulator. The new one allows for a lot more mass flow and also higher pressure. That lead me to pushing way too much gas through the kiln, putting it into reduction. The first firing was messy because everything was different from what I’m used to. I had to open the damper at the flue a lot more. Also the firing was very short, partly because I was afraid of running out of gas. Usually a glaze firing takes 6 to 7 hours. This wasn’t even 4 hours. And that might have been the reason for so many broken pots. That or quick drying introduced too much internal stress.
